Well, businesses and organisations will soon have to show clear procedures are in place to safeguard against sexual harassment.
We understand that the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has written to a number of top legal firms, FTSE 100 companies, universities, charities and governmental departments warning that it could take legal action if they fail to take appropriate steps. They have until 19th January to respond.
Firms are also reminded that where it discovers systematic failings or firms refuse to engage the EHRC can exercise its statutory enforcement powers.
Here’s to the ‘silence breakers’
Meanwhile, Time magazine’s 2017 Person of the Year is ‘The Silence Breakers’, those who came forward with their stories about being victims of sexual harassment.
The fall-out from Harvey Weinstein and sexual harassment allegations in Parliament show no signs of abating. As Edward Felsenthal, Time’s editor-in-chief, says: “This is the fastest-moving social change we’ve seen in decades.”
#MeToo movement
Let’s hope that out of this debacle comes some lasting and marked positive change to preventing, spotting and tacking harassment in the workplace.
