78% of Companies pay men more than women

Over 10,000 companies who employ 250 or more have published their gender pay gap results.  It’s no surprise really that it shows the vast majority (78%) of the biggest companies pay men more than their female counterparts.  The size of the pay gap varies between sectors with Finance having the greatest differential. (ONS’s latest Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (Ashe).
The Fawcett Society charity believe that gender pay gap reporting has the potential to be a game changer in prompting people to talk about pay and find out what their colleagues earn and is calling on women to do just that.

So, what does this mean for you, the Employee?  If you feel you are victim of discriminatory practices?

  • Start a conversation with your peers – find out what they earn and share information within your team or organisation.
  • Do you have appraisals? If so, don’t be afraid to raise this issue and challenge workplace culture and practices.
  • Start a women’s network or join one if you have one.
  • Union reps if they are available should be able to say what they are working on in relation to pay equality.

As an Employer – what steps can you take to address the Gender Pay Gap?

  • If you do have a gender pay gap issue, determine the root cause?
  • Develop an action plan to address this. If you don’t know if you have an issue, the first step is to determine what the gender pay gap is for your company. (https://gender-pay-gap.service.gov.uk/Viewing/search-results)
  • Analysis – are your senior roles mostly dominated by men? If so, does your recruitment process need an overhaul to make sure that you are not discriminating in hiring and promotion decisions?
  • When jobs are advertised, do you offer flexible working or skilled part-time working?
  • Are your female employees over represented in lower paid roles?
  • Are your training, career development and promotion processes fit for purpose?
