A couple of surveys that I read recently seemed to give conflicting and counterintuitive results.
Research1 carried out by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) into workers and the living wage found that hairdressers were the third lowest paid group of employees in the UK. Others who made the top 10 included bar staff, waiting staff and nursery nurses. Not a great surprise in that, perhaps.
Meanwhile other research carried out by the City & Guilds2 showed that the happiest group of workers were… hairdressers.
Of course this research just reiterates that there isn’t any great link between pay and contentment at work. But research3 carried out by Warwick University has shown that there is a link between happiness and productivity.
The researchers ran four experiments over a number of years where half of the time in the laboratory was spent in raising the subjects’ happiness levels, and in one of the other experiments they spent approximately two dollars per person on fruit and chocolate to raise productivity by almost 20% for a short period of concentrated work.
The conclusions of the research were that, on average, happier workers were 12% more productive.
